Among the eight methods of treatment, this formula utilizes the clearing method (qing fa) for the most part. It is a strategy of purification and transformation . This formula deals with fire toxin or phlegm-fire of various origins including the transformation of a pathogenic influence in the channels, overindulgence in rich or greasy foods, or trauma with transmission of stagnant Qi and blood in the relatively superficial levels of the body, which in turn causes the fluids to simmer. The clumping in the channels between the levels of the skin and flesh forms sores or carbuncles that are characterized buy inflammation and pus. The battle between and the normal Qi in the exterior gives rise to dermal manifestations. The battle between the strong pathogenic influences and the strong normal Qi produces phlegm-fire that clumps. |

Lian Qiao-Rorsythia Suspensa
This not only clears heat and toxins, but dissipates or reduces nodules. It is in most formulas that include Hot Type Sores, carbuncles, and lumps especially in the head area. It expels externally contracts Wind Heat commonly accompanied with fever, slight chills, sore throat, and headache. It is bitter, slightly acrid, cool and enters the Heart, Liver, Gall Bladder Channels. It has a strong effect against Shigella and Staphyulococcus rendering it antimicrobial. Da Huang-Rhizoma Coptidis This root Drains Heat and moves the stool and in the formula aids in the reduction of heat in the body. It is bitter cold and enters Stomach, Large Intestine, and Liver Channels. Huang Qin-Radis Scutellariae Baicalensis This root is very effective against Hot Sores and Swillings. It Clears Heat and quells Fire, particularly in the upper body. It also subdues Ascendant Liver Yang and has strong effect on temperature regulation. It is somewhat diuretic which aids in clearing heat from the body. It is bitter, cold and enters the Heart, Lung, gall Bladder and Large Intestine Channels. Zhi Zi- Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoidis This herb is commonly used in all Heat syndromes and is useful where there is irritability, restlessness, insomnia, or delirium. It is very effective in clearing and draining Heat and Damp Heat. It is bitter, cold, and enters Liver, Lung, and Stomach Channels. Chi Shao- Radix Paeoniae Rubra This root Invigorates the Blood and deals well with early stages of abscesses, boils, skin blotches and bleeding. It is sour, bitter, slightly cold and enters the Liver and Spleen Channels. Bai Xian- Cortex Dictamni Dasycarpi Radicis Clears Heat, detoxifies Fire Poison, expels Wind and dries Dampness. This herb is used for Damp Heat sores, carbuncles, and rashes. It also has a strong anti-fungal effect. It is bitter, salty, cold and enters the Spleen and Stomach Channels. Mu Dan Pi- Cortex Moutan Radicis This herb centers or roots the Qi of the Kidneys, and Liver by cooling and relaxing the body. It is slightly cold, acrid, and bitter and enters the Kidney, Heart and Liver Channels. |
